Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
